What Vacation Can You Afford with $5,000?

We priced 109 vacations with the hidden costs included. Here's what $5,000 really buys, and which trips only pretend to fit.

Numbers from our calculators · checked October 2026 · 6 min read
The short answer

For two people, 69 of our 109 vacations come in at $5,000 or less once the forgotten costs are counted. For a family of four, the list shrinks to 13. The trick is that your booking total needs to stay near $3,500, because the extras add about 42% on these trips.

Five thousand dollars feels like a lot of money right up until you try to spend it on a vacation. Then it turns into a negotiation: between the trip you want, the trip the website says costs $4,800, and the trip your credit card statement describes three weeks later.

So we did the math the honest way. We took every vacation calculator on this site, set it to two travelers at the trip's typical length, and added the costs that never show up on the booking page: bag fees, tips, taxes, transfers, the airport sandwich. Then we sorted the lot by what each trip really costs.

First, the rule nobody tells you

A $5,000 budget does not buy a $5,000 trip. On the trips that fit, the extras added about 42% on top of the obvious costs. Work backward and your flights, hotel and tickets should total around $3,500, not $5,000. Anything closer to the line and you'll be quietly doing math at the resort bar.

Plenty of room: under $3,500

These leave you real breathing room, which on vacation means saying yes to the boat tour without checking your banking app first. Road trips, cabins and US city breaks dominate, because a tank of gas is the cheapest plane ticket ever invented.

Comfortable: $3,500 to $4,500

This is where Europe shows up. A long weekend in many European cities lands here, flights included, and city trips are refreshingly honest. Once you've paid for the flight and the hotel, the surprises are mostly small: a city tax here, a card fee there.

These fit, technically. One surprise lobster dinner and they don't. If one of these is the dream, it can work. Just book it knowing there's no cushion, and decide in advance which splurge you're skipping.

Bringing the kids?

Everything changes at four people. Every plane seat, park ticket and buffet plate multiplies, and suddenly the list is short. At $5,000 for a family of four, these are the trips that still fit:

Notice how many of them you can drive to. Skip four plane tickets and four sets of bag fees, and $5,000 suddenly goes a long way.

Five ways to make $5,000 go further

  1. Drive if it's under a day away. Four airline seats can easily pass $1,500 before anyone has packed a snack. Our calculators will price the drive from your city.
  2. Go carry-on only. At about $45 per bag each way on most US airlines, two travelers save about $180 on a round trip just by rolling instead of checking.
  3. Pick hotels without resort fees. They're the travel industry's favorite magic trick: a "$199" room that somehow costs a lot more than $199 by checkout.
  4. Look at shoulder season. The same trip a few weeks before or after peak season often costs far less, and the places are nicer when they're not packed.
  5. Choose trips where the extras are small. City breaks add far less on top than cruises and resorts. If your budget is tight, an honest price is worth more than a low one.

How we got these numbers

Each trip uses its calculator's sample plan, priced for two travelers (or four, in the family list) at its typical length, with typical airfare from a US airport and the forgotten costs that are on by default. Prices were checked against published rates and are updated monthly. Your city, dates and style will change things, which is exactly why every trip links to a calculator where you can change any number.
